This summer the Random Dudes will release their second album within months. It is called Cheveux Des Riches and celebrates a hairstyle that resembles a certain milieu. You could say it is a sociological album that throws terms like „class-struggle“ or „Habitus“ right at you. The hair style Cheveux Des Riches can be described as the following: hair gelled or combed backwards, curly in the back, grey or white in colour and from time to time a receding hairline might occur, which is absolutely tolerated because it’s a sign of wisdom and experience.

Pierre Bourdieu would have loved this lo-fi driven, nonchalant and cheeky recording project by Roland Sonnabend, who is Art Academy graduate from Düsseldorf, Germany and master-student of french conceptual artist Dominique Gonzalez-Foerster, while currently studying with John Morgan. You can sense that the album was recorded in a rush, in between a few days between Christmas and New Years Eve, in the basement of his girlfriends parents. He made use of a Yamaha Ps 20, which Beach House used for their Space Song and bought a cheep 80s Casio on the internet for some more nice keys. The classic sound of the Green Bullet which originally was used as a harmonica microphone gives the album its warm and yet edgy vocal sound, while the Gibson SG makes the whole thing rock`n´roll. Inspired by the likes of french-german act Stereo Total, The Brian Jonestown Massacre, Velvet Underground, The Beach Boys, Morabezza Tobacco, Spritualized, Spacemen 3, Stereolab, Free Weed, Insecure Men and Ty Segall, the project puts all of these into a blender and adds some of its own spice.

The album’s cover is inspired by City Light’s Pocket Poet Series using Berthold Wolpe’s famous Albertus typeface which he designed in the 1930s. The particular issue referenced on the album cover (Number 19) refers to Frank O’Hara’s Lunch Poems, mirroring its breezy tone in the music. The cover of the single Art People (Number 5) however is a reference to Allen Ginsberg’s Howl. Unfortunately the music distributors and streaming services curtail the artistic freedom and don’t allow any text on cover art other than the title of the release and the band, that’s why you will find another version of the cover on Spotify and co…

The Song Art People itself serves as a charge against the art world’s pretentiousness, while the title track Cheveux des Riches celebrates the Hairstyle mentioned above as well as the comforts of the upper class and a mediterranean way of life. The fuzzy On My Mind explores the state of being in love. The velvety track People I Don’t Like is pretty self-explanatory and Life Advice (From Strangers) deals with unasked advice from people you barely know or even dislike. The classic-rock-influenced and kinda glammy song Riche En Californie is about being rich, surfing, making love and fulfilling certain standards, while All You Ever Wanted (Was Good Looking Hair) is an ingenious payoff with capitalism and business people who threaten the planet and societal peace, going hand in hand with a mesmerizing groove that reminds of the early Beach Boys.

The structure of the whole album mocks Sgt. Peppers which is often told to be the best album of all time, but Pet Sounds is way better, though Paul McCartney is the best Beatle. This is why there is a song Cheveux Des Riches - Reprise that makes brings back the title track’s bridge. This one is followed by the final banger and kick-out called Tous Le Jour, an ode to love and wholesomeness that starts like a pop-song and leaves you with a facemelting transition into a noisy guitar-driven track.

All in all you could argue that this album will be one of the most refreshing things that you will hear all year, instead of all this overproduced bullshit and all those so called punk and post-punk bands that arise at every corner.

The Random Dudes will stay around in order to stick it to the man whenever they can.

The Album comes as a digital release and in a very limited edition of 50 cassettes. Its first single, the title track Cheveux des Riches was released together with a lyric video on June 10th 2022. The second single Art People followed on June 24th. Up next is Riche En Californie on July 19th. And finally the Album will drop on August 12th!
